An unnamed immortal fox spirit from China has recently married a white man from the United States. As a fox spirit, she must feed off the life of another in order to survive, which is why she agrees to move with her husband to Brooklyn, New York.
In New York, the demon spirit begins to recount her long past and the loss of the love of her life. She recalls a time thousands of years ago when she, a pheasant and pipa spirit were charged with overthrowing an empire by their goddess leader, Nüwa. During this time, the fox spirit fell in love with the pipa spirit. However, after the battle against the emperor was won, the pipa and fox spirit were separated, with the pipa spirit being reincarnated and forgetting their love.
The fox-spirit recounts how she often searched for the pipa spirit, finding her a few times in different forms—once as the wife of a nobleman and once as a solider—but she has only been able to watch her from a distance.
At the end of the story, the fox spirit decides that she has spent enough time living off of her current husband, and leaves him to continue on the long and lonely journey of her everlasting life.
