A humanoid woman of incredible lifespan watches the last of her friend's lineage die. The final family member lived in San Francisco, was a filmmaker, and was befriended under false pretenses by the narrator. The narrator then details the lives of her and her friend over the years. Her friend decided to get married, have a child, and live temporarily as a human even though her husband would only live for 24 years; she would then resume living with her friend as a nonhuman. The narrator is very upset about her decision but supports her friend anyway, thinking of the time when the friend decided she wanted to have a child. The two women have their paintings taken in their finery. The friend dies from complications from her pregnancy two years into the marriage despite the hundreds of years with the narrator. The narrator watches over her friend's family lineage, keeping it alive. The narrator hunts down the painting of her and her friend at the British Museum, where she cries while looking at it. The narrator reflects on her friend after the last family member's death and thinks that she stayed through it all, keeping her friend's lineage alive for six hundred years.
