Plot Summary
An alien-like space pilot named Mada finds herself amidst an intergalactic battle between her, her ship (whom she can communicate with), and a brutal enemy of Utopian ships. The ships begin firing on her ship and she demands that they escape using time travel. However, this time travel sends them to their world, but several billion years into the future. Mada misses her siblings, family, friends, and world.
At first, Mada finds time for herself--spending forty days in a greenhouse growing plants. Eventually, the ship encourages her to eat and to return.
With the help of her intelligent ship, Mada travels to an area called the HR683 system and shapeshifts to look more like the current inhabitants--ones that represent humans. She goes to understand what happened to her species. The world is very different from the past, especially regarding land forms like oceans.
The place in which Mada enters is called Harmonious Struggle. It is a place of many shops, restaurants, and art galleries. People greet her and ask her to eat. She goes to a restaurant called Devil's Apple and her waiter is a man named, Owen. When she asks Owen about the location of a library, his manager scolds him for being distracting to a customer.
However, Mada finds this somewhat charming and Owen offers to befriend her. She learns that he is a poet and knows she isn't from their nation because she doesn't comment. He continues to share his poetry and the proclaims his love to her. Mada declines.
Mada and Owen share time together talking about parents and Made becomes upset with Owen about the topic. With the advice of the ship, she pretends to be a goddess and that she had no mother. Owen doesn't believe her. She asks him to come with her and start a new world.
Owen and Mada go to a farm they call Athens. She misses her people as she looks around and is confused about what they will call all of the new plants and organisms. Owen hands her a rock and explains that whatever she throws it at will be named after her. They share a tender moment together before sleeping in separate bedrooms, even though Mada knows he wants to share more intimate moments with her.
After dinner of the next day, Mada and Owen kiss and have sex--producing a child. They end up having fifty children together. Though Mada doesn't think she is a good parent, she enjoys watching Owen in his role.
On their anniversary, the ship watches all of the children. Owen shares a poem he wrote for her and then they have sex. After, she tells him to take care of their children and then tells the ship to skip to the future by six minutes. However, she ends up coughing up blood and reliving the moment again. Mada tells the ship to skip again, but she finally tells the ship to stop. Mada spends the moment with Owen again, content with her life, and tells him she wants to live with him forever.
