A lonely divorcee wanders the streets of downtown Indianapolis at dusk, ruminating on his ex-wife and their failed relationship. Aimless and almost out of money, he is not sure how to move on.
Suddenly, out of the blue, a young woman approaches and asks for a meal. Together they go to a bar, where the man learns that the woman is also divorced. She asks him to pretend to be in a happy couple with her. They call him Johnnie and her Norma.
They drive back to Norma's house and make dinner. Over the course of the conversation, they discuss their pretend relationship, subtextually working through some of the problems from their former relationships. Johnnie learns that Norma had been contemplating suicide that night, if she hadn't met him.
After the meal, Norma leads Johnnie to her bedroom. The lines between pretend and reality blur as they contemplate love and their new budding relationship. Johnnie learns that Norma's real name is Catherine.
