Plot Summary
A WWII vet, Jackson, jumps off a train and stumbles upon a woman, Belle, living on a dilapidated farm by herself. Belle’s father was hit by a train and died a while ago, and her sickly mother died in the past year. The farm has been falling into disrepair. Jackson ends up sticking around on the farm for years, fixing the place up room by room. The nature of Jackson and Belle’s relationship is extremely ambiguous.
Years later, Jackson takes Belle to Toronto to have surgery done. After the operation, Belle is acting a little oddly. She tells Jackson that years ago, she was taking a bath and her father accidentally walked in on her. He looked at her whole body, and then walked away. The next day he was it by a train on the tracks. She explains that she feels it wasn’t his fault that this happened, because he was stuck on a farm with his very sick wife.
Jackson is jarred by Belle acting differently, and goes for a long walk the next day. He stumbles upon a man being carried out of a building on a stretcher. The owner of the building runs out and asks Jackson to watch over things while he checks on the man in the hospital. When the owner returns, he asks to hire Jackson temporarily to help manage the building. Jackson stays for quite a while.
One day he reads in the newspaper that Belle has passed.
Another day he hears a woman talking to the owner of the building, looking for her daughter who lived there at one point. He recognizes the voice as that of a girl he went to highschool with. They had been highschool sweethearts, and they wrote letters to each other when he was off at war. She was waiting for him at the train station to come home, but he had jumped off early to avoid her. That’s when he stumbled upon Belle’s farm.
He does not go out to walk to the woman. A few days later he leaves the building and hops on a train to head somewhere else.
