Plot Summary
A woman starring in an HGTV-style home-purchasing reality show observes a moment of marital tension between some of the contestants; it makes her reflect upon her strained relationship with her husband, Damian, who is also a star of the show. They are currently filming a Christmas special a few months early. Damian believes his wife is too obsessed with fame, ignoring her children (two tween girls). He insists that the family will not renew their contract for more seasons of the show, which upsets the woman, who grew up poor and believes that becoming famous is the only way to remain relevant and shield her daughters from the same struggles. She used to dream of living in an elegant house like the ones she sells.
The woman goes home and is treated like dirt by her two girls. One girl recently wrote a blog post about the ethics of redlining; the woman did not even know that she knew this term. The only person the girls respect is their nanny, Tabitha.
Audience members resonate with the couple's origin story: they created and submitted a demo tape on a whim. Damian misses the life the two had together before fame drove them apart. They were close when they were both real estate agents, but when they had children, the woman insisted on spoiling them so they would not grow up feeling inadequate like she did. The woman tries to fake emotion while filming the show and buying vintage Christmas ornaments for the family receiving the new home.
At the couple's home, their daughters tell them they will no longer be used to model products; they want a cut of the proceeds. Damian tells them that the show will no longer interfere with their lives. He and his wife end up fighting on air. Neither person in the relationship grew up with a strong example of marriage.
The last day of filming arrives, and the couple kisses on camera to boost ratings, though their contract is about to expire. They discuss the home with the man receiving it, who claims to be content with his life and family no matter what. The couple's daughters go viral on TikTok.
The pair attend a meeting at the network to discuss their contract. The head of the department claims to want to work with their daughters, who are being mentored and managed by their nanny, to create viral TikTok content. The group comes to a deal: Damian will undergo one more season of the show if the woman manages her daughters.
