Young girls from a Catholic school come across a forest at the edge of their playground. One day, Abbey notices that if they go into the forest and run as fast as they can, they turn into Giants. Samantha, Abbey’s ex-best friend, begins to try and take control of the rules about the forest, leading to a conflict between the two. The unnamed narrator recounts the relationship in the story, a cousin of Abbey. After many girls sustain injuries while playing as giants, the girls become concerned that the teachers will notice they are sneaking into the woods at recess and never allow them to play there again. This leads to a fight between Samantha and Abbey for control of what the group does. Eventually, Samantha becomes the only girl who runs into the woods every day.
