Plot Summary
Late at night, Trudy comes home after work at the Home for Mentally Handicapped Adults. Her daughter, Robin, has left the light on for her. Instinctively, Robin goes to check on a jug because of a thought that has been bothering her, and confirms that the necklace that should have been inside it is gone. With anger, Trudy goes to Robin’s room and throws the jug at the ground, yelling that the necklace had belonged to Robin’s grandmother and was precious. Trudy admonishes Robin for taking the necklace. She knew Robin had placed it in the coffin during the funeral wake of her classmate, Tracy Lee, who recently passed away in a car crash. Many of Tracy Lee’s classmates had dropped precious trinkets into the girl’s casket like a religious ritual. The next day, Trudy sips her coffee with ruminating about her ex-husband, Dan, who left to live out his affair with another woman. In the middle of this broken marriage, Robin had changed immensely, realizing that her father is happy with his new family, and becomes “severe, sarcastic, and determined.” Trudy reminisces on the night she got drunk and met Dan. Back in the present time, she hears more details from her coworkers about the events at Tracy Lee’s funeral. Trudy’s mind switches back to memories of her marriage, and recalls the day she found out about Dan’s affair. After a month of forgiveness and living together happily again, however, Trudy had realized Dan’s unmoving affection towards the other woman and told him to go. Again, her mind switches back to present conversations with her co-worker Janet, who tells her to pray that she can get the necklace back. She listens to Janet encourage her to join the Circle of Prayer, where people phone others in the Circle and asks them join them in personal prayers. Though she is skeptical at first, Janet gives in and prays to get Dan back and the necklace back. After a flashback to her honeymoon with Dan, Trudy gets a call from Robin asking if she can catch a ride back home together. Trudy asks her co-worker if he prays and is comforted by his nonchalant answer.
