Plot Summary
Lawrence is hidden out in a cabin secluded from society, and despite his efforts, a man has found him. Introducing himself as Will, he tells Lawrence that both of them have suffered similar fates and begins to recall his story to him. On a honeymoon trip, Will and his wife decided to visit a series of book depots: decrepit buildings that are reclaimed for book storage and the people who enjoy exploring these areas, who call themselves Crawlers. On their trip, Will and Sarah were exploring a depot when they got separated. Searching for her in the entire area, Will encounters a ghost-like woman, but not Sarah. Searching online, Will learns that the woman he saw was someone who had gone missing long before. So, revealing this to Lawrence, he is hoping that Lawrence might know something about the situation from his experience with a disappearance. When Lawrence went crawling with Esmerelda, they were similarly separated and when Lawrence found her, she was atop several book pages with gashing cuts all over her body. She begged for him to stop it, and Lawrence smashed her head with the book that she had ripped the pages out of, before this trance she was in consumed her entirely. He filed a police report, but no one could make sense of it, so she became a cold case. He hides now, either from the body of Esmerelda, or her vengeful sister. Realizing that Will never answered his first question, Lawrence asks again how he found him. Will says that the email belonging to Esmeralda contacted him with the address and asked him to tell Lawrence that she will see him soon.
