Plot Summary
In a futuristic world, Father Damien Har Veris, a Knight Inquisitor for the Christian church, meets with his Lord Commander. Damien asks for a leave of absence to rest, but instead gets assigned to another mission, on Arion, to fight another surge of heresy. Damien has fought so many heretics that their questionings of his faith has led to a wavering of his. During the three-week trip to Arion, he studies the heretical Bible which tells the story of Judas Iscariot. Damien discusses the book with Arla, his captain, who has no religious faith, telling her it is unbelievable, to which she points out the incredible things that happen in his Bible. Once arrived, Damien decides to go and meet Lukyan Judasson, who had approved the heretical bible, to ask him questions. Lukyan immediately tells Damien that he made up the new faith, creating the Order of Saint Judas, because he is a Liar. This is a greater religion with a different set of beliefs from ‘traditional’ religion that most people find unbearable, so Liars invent faiths and beauty. Lukyan tells Damien he is contributing to perpetuating a lie by squashing rebellions. To further convince him, Lukyan brings Damien to meet Jon Azure Cross, a telepath, who tells Damien his faith is weak. In that moment, Damien decides he believes in truth above all. He leaves. Damien finds a way to destroy them both and the new faith: he fabricates a lie that the telepath had messed with the minds of the Saint Judas followers and he purges the libraries of the facts that support the new religion. The new religion is crushed, but Damien cannot go after the Liars. In his year of rest, he understands that he has lost his faith. Upon return to his Commander, he asks to retire, but his request is refused. He receives a bigger ship and continues to serve.
