Plot Summary
College student Loren knows of a beckoning tone that one may hear throughout the course of their life. She warns you to run if you ever hear it. Loren remembers a story her father told her of a time he fell off a steep cliff and was saved by a figure that was not human, only to wake up sometime later in a hospital. Loren feels that everyone has stories like these, including herself.
Loren remembers the first summer that she remembers encountering what she calls ‘the tone.’ The tone is a subtle sound that occurs at odd frequencies. That summer, Loren agreed to be a caretaker for two Airbnb properties owned by Greg. Greg is friends with Loren’s boyfriend, Gavin. One property was on George St. The other was on King East St. & Bathurst. The place on George St. is warm and welcoming. The place on King East St. & Bathurst is a brand-new condominium complex with a dark, unwelcoming industrial aesthetic. Loren calls this property the Puppet Motel because she thinks it is creepy.
Loren observes how it is easy to lose track of time there, how the floor is uneven despite being brand new, and the tone that is often present. A girl, Miss Barrie, allegedly went missing after staying later.
One of Loren's hobbies is following the tone and writing down people’s experiences with it.
In April, Loren had nowhere to live as plans with her father fell through. She then moves in with her boyfriend, Gavin. The tension of living together becomes taxing on their relationship. However, they remain living together through the summer.
Loren attempts to tell Gavin about her odd experience at the Puppet Motel. Loren shows her an mp3 file of the tone. Gavin is skeptical and gas-lights Loren as he dismisses her concerns about the property. Shortly after, Gavin puts all of Loren’s things outside and breaks up with her.
Loren has nowhere to go. Her boss offers her the George St. location as it is free for a bit. Loren moves in but is reported to management by her neighbors for illegal subletting. Greg says that Loren can move into the Puppet Motel as it is also available. Loren accepts the offer as she has nowhere else to go. After moving in, Loren experiences a slew of odd experiences including the tone and irregular A.I. activation on her cellphone.
She speaks with Greg who asks why there are so many bad reviews of the Puppet Motel property. Many of the reviews describe people doing odd things or not having specific memories. Other reviews describe people who went missing after staying there or leaving with a permanent ringing in their ears.
Loren explores the building’s history but nothing that would lead to a ‘haunting’ had ever occurred there. Loren investigates the effects of sounds that occur at irregular frequencies. She discovers that these types of sounds may produce haunting effects without the interference of a Ghost. She finds a Facebook page of a person, Ross Puget, who is an expert on hauntings without Ghosts.
She sends him the mp3 file of the tone and describes what is happening in the building. She wakes up in the middle of the night, standing in front of the bedroom wall. She leaves only to receive text messages from an unknown number asking for help. She goes to her mom’s and quits her job.
She goes back to the building the next day to return the keys. Her mother hears the tone. Loren has a lapse of memory as her mother leaves her in the main room of the Puppet Motel to use the restroom. Loren remembers being suddenly in front of the spare room wall. She sees a person on the wall, Miss Barrie, asking for help. The person is attached with strings and threads. Loren runs outside.
Ross Puget from Facebook got back to her days later and explained that the sensations could be from shifts in existential frequencies and liminal spaces. They can occur when a place is not inhabited for a while. After the incident at the Puppet Motel Loren still receives messages; she still hears the tone, and she has odd experiences sometimes. However, she can cope with them.
