Plot Summary
At Christine and John’s wedding, guests crowd Christine to ask about her leg, and she has to continuously tell the story of how she was bitten by another woman’s dog. Most of the guests know that Christine is pregnant, and many people also ask about Stevie, Christine’s nine-year-old son from another marriage; however, no one knows Stevie’s father, who left because he felt that something was “wrong” with his son. After she moved to the countryside, Christine met John and became a full-time painter. At the wedding, Christine and John speak with a minister about Stevie, and John says that he feels privileged to know the boy, which lets people know that Stevie is not his son. Christine and John stand in front of the guests, and John invites Stevie to stand with them, which makes guests emotional. Christine finds that she hates them and no longer wants anyone to wish her well. Feeling dizzy, Christine follows Robert, a man who works for her, into her studio, where they share a joint. He asks her flirtily if she’d like for him to take a look at her leg, and Christine feels jealous when Annette, her art dealer, comes in to talk to Robert as well. Christine thinks to herself that her life is “closing down,” and wishes she were like Robert and Annette instead, who smile at each other. Annette makes Christine tell Robert the story of her old dog Alexander, who fell in love with another dog and ran away to see her. Then Christine leaves to look for Stevie, who is chasing fireflies. John sees Christine and says that being married feels exactly the same as before, to which Christine agrees.
