Plot Summary
Janet tears through the remnants of her past love, burning each and every letter Jerry sent. She agonizes over their relationship that was torn away by a terrible tragedy. Janet, a brooding and solemn American woman in Britain, won over the heart of Jerry, an outgoing, romantic, untamed French soldier. They exchanged many letters, pronouncing their love for one another. In one letter, Jerry reveals a new passion—airplanes. His new word is “Contact!,” aeronautical vernacular describing that a plane is ready for takeoff. Janet is afraid of the danger, but he reassures her. One day, Jerry’s friend crosses the borders of France to Britain to deliver a message. He bears the terrible news that Jerry has been in a terrible accident, never to walk again, and covered in burns, but he will live. With this news, Janet is slowly haunted by the sound of an airplane about to land, and one day, during a vicious storm, she runs to meet the airplane. She believes Jerry has landed and is hiding from her, watching her. She talks to him, and realizes she must set him free with the word: “Contact!” The storm subsides.
