Plot Summary
Deborah, an anxious woman and hippie, comes home to find a drawer on her bed. She believes that her artist boyfriend Phillip removed the drawer to find something and to tell her a message. She thinks about how he must have seen how she packed the drawer with his letters and notes that he would leave her and when she puts the drawer back she realizes that the first rug (a zebra rug) he brought into the house is missing. Immediately, she worries that Phillip has left her and she nervously waits for their daily call to come. When it does, she begs him to tell him what message he is trying to tell her and he asks her if she's considered that they have been ripped off/burglarized. After this she feels reassured that he hasn't left her and recounts how her psychiatrist has told her she has abandonment issues due to her father being killed in a war. She makes lamb stew for Phillip when he comes home and then she cleans up after him until they both are tired. To make herself feel more elegant, she goes into her drawer and realizes that her favorite scarf (which Phillip likes) has been stolen and she begins to lay in bed thinking that he will love her less as a result of that.
