Plot Summary
A middle-aged man named Sam Small decides to go out for a drink one night, even though his wife Mully is sick. As a compromise, he tells himself he’ll come home early. At midnight, Sam rushes out of the bar with the realization that he’s late for Mully, which is when a bang strikes him down. On the ground across from him is his doppelganger, who claims he too is Sam, only he spent the night at home caring for his wife. The two dub the other half Sammywell and decide he will spend time with Mully while Sam goes off on an adventure. Ecstatic, Sam runs to the train station, where he is utterly hopeless without his wife’s assistance. He manages to get a ticket to Blackpool and spends a week there eating, hanging around town, and spending money until he realizes none of it satisfies him, and he decides to return to Mully. When he gets back to his house, he finds Sammywell and Mully there happier than he’s ever seen her, and he gets Sammywell to come outside so they can switch places. Sammywell wants to stay in his role and the two argue, then start fighting until Mully discovers them and they have to explain their dilemma. She banishes them from the house until they can return as one person. The two start fighting in hopes of maybe killing the other and taking his place, but one perfectly timed blow allows their bodies to merge again. When Sam Small wakes up, Mully is caring for him, and he promises to treat her like his better half did. She says that she likes him the way he is, and she is his better half.
