Plot Summary
Holly breaks up with Kyle over the phone after hearing him laugh with his friends about checking off 'yellow' on his list of girls to date. Her mother desperately wants her to date a white boy and reap what she believes to be the many benefits assimilation has to offer. Holly, however, is not so sure. She works at The Luckiest Wok at the mall, and she's certain she was hired to be the only Asian face at the restaurant. At her first shift of spring break, she recounts her boy and family trouble to her coworker Vera, who asks Holly what she wants to do next, rather than what her mother wants. Doughnuts are what she wants, Holly decides. In line for doughnuts across the food court she meets a cute white boy, working at the new shake bar upstairs, who entreats her to come buy their doughnuts upstairs on the house. He gives her his name and number, leaving her to ponder whether she wants to dive right into a relationship with another white boy. Later, Holly gets a text from an old family friend asking to meet up. She looks up his profile and finds that he's gotten very cute too. Holly makes a pros and cons list to help with these dating decisions. The next day, she heads upstairs after her shift to meet the boy from the shake bar.
