Plot Summary
A man talks about the rabbit he owns, and how it seems to know him better than he knows it. For some reason, the connection they have in this moment is so strong that he needs the rabbit to speak words right then, and tell him if it's okay, because something bad happened. The man thinks back to recent events. He and his wife, Sarah, are amicably separated and live apart from one another, but are not divorced. They never had pets because of her allergies. However, their children pushed so hard for a pet that they finally broke down and got Gunther, the rabbit. He wasn't easy to take care of at first, and the kids lost interest. They even considered putting the rabbit down so as not to deal with it anymore. But, eventually, they found a vet who helped them figure out that Gunther had an infection, and how to treat it. Things worked out, but the family began to fall into a rut. Even Gunther fell a little by the wayside. Once the kids left for college and adult life, the house felt both too empty and too full. Eventually, Sarah got a promotion across the country and they told their kids that they were split up but not divorcing. The man kept Gunther. Now, the man does some yard work and decides to bring Gunther with him to see the outdoors for the first time since they got him. While he's not paying attention, Gunther is attacked by a snake. The man grabs the snake and rips Gunther from it, throws the snake on the ground, and stomps on it. When Sarah calls later that day for a general check in, he tells her about the attack. Gunther is largely unresponsive, until Sarah calls out in shock over the phone and he twists his head, suddenly recognizing her voice. The man hangs up and watches Gunther. He thinks about how their shared pasts and memories all live on in Gunther's head, even if everyone else has moved on.
