When an invasion of blue bugs in a small town begins to give the people they bite dreams, a local bartender, Al, experiences his own infestation. His dreams manifest his arguments and growing disconnect with his wife, Irma, and his attraction to another woman. He has a conversation with a local doctor and judge, who are both known for their outlandish stories and upper-class activities, and the doctor reveals that he discovered a blue sphere on one of his adventures and brought it back to the town. He claims the bugs hatched from the sphere and disappeared, and they’ve been giving people dreams around town to feed on their blood. Al tries to force Irma to experience one of the dreams, but when a bug bites her, she dies instantly. He realizes that some people can’t dream or change their ways, and too late wishes he had shown her more love earlier.
