Plot Summary
Willa, an artist-turned-waitress to pay the bills, is haunted by her father's death. Ten years prior, Willa pried a gun from her father's ailing hands to prevent his attempted euthanasia-suicide. Just a year after the incident, he died from his debilitating cancer. Willa plans to commit suicide by taking cyanide from her boyfriend Hugo's research lab. Her plans are seemingly thwarted when Professor Rainbolt, Hugo's graduate advisor, sees Willa leaving the lab. Not wanting to get Hugo into trouble but still wanting to kill herself, Willa keeps a small vial of the cyanide. She then tells Hugo about her plans and hands over the rest of the cyanide. Hugo and Willa's relationship is rocky at best; Willa had an affair with a man named Chuck a few years before, and it still affects their relationship. Willa worries about what Hugo's mother will think, given their fraught relationship. Hugo calls Professor Rainbolt who admits that his wife has also been suicidal for many years. Hugo is not in trouble and he and Willa go to return the cyanide. In the car on the way, Hugo finds Willa's back-up vial and becomes enraged. In the parking lot of a Wendy's, the vial spills in the car threatening the lives of not only Willa and Hugo, but also their two dogs in the backseat. Immediately, Willa and Hugo leap out and rescue the dogs and themselves. After an argument, Willa and Hugo clean out the car, put the dogs in the back, and drive home.
