Cam, a teenage boy from Austin, is in South Carolina to visit his Grandma with his family. He gets a fresh haircut and buys new clothes and new Jordans; he will see Jessica Booker tonight, who has been his crush for over a year and was also the first girl he ever kissed. He and his cousin Myron get in the car to go hang out with Jessica and her friends. When Cam asks about Jessica, though, Myron says she probably doesn't like 'guys like him' — the kids call Cam an oreo, Black on the outside, white on the inside. At the party, Myron code-switches flawlessly, but Cam feels awkward and out of place. When he sees Jessica and says hi, he tries his best to fit in. Jessica grabs his arm and talks to him privately outside. When she asks why he's trying so hard, Cam asks if she stopped texting him because he's not Black enough. She laughs. She says that in December, when she stopped texting him, her good friend Linton McCants was shot by the police. On the same day she posted about the shooting, Cam posted about his all-white academic bowl team. Jess admits she can't be with someone who doesn't understand her and leaves. An hour later, Myron comes out to the car and they drive home. Cam asks Myron about Linton McCants.
