A woman named Marion from Phoenix, Arizona has a passionate relationship with a man named Stan. They meet up at a hotel during her lunch breaks to have sex. They want to marry, but Stan wants to settle his financial debts first. One day at Marion's office job for a realty company, her boss gives her a $40,000 cash payment for a property for a young woman. He tells Marion to put the cash in the safe, but Marion secretly slips the envelope into her purse. Seeking to help Stan settle his debts, Marion drives to surprise him in California, where he lives. Marion is pulled over after she almost gets in an accident but is let go by the officer. He follows the already paranoid Marion until she refills her gas. It begins to rain heavily, so Marion decides to stay at a motel. When she conversed with the man from the front desk, he mentioned his sick mother and increasing bank loans. Marion eventually feel bad for acting out of greed and thinks that other people might need the money more than her, deciding there is still time to return and fix things. Marion leaves $500 for the motel worker as she checks out and drives home. She stops at the office to place the money back in the safe. Her boss suddenly appears and attempts to call the police, but Marian stops the call. She pleads with him, but he tells her she will go to prison. Her boss tells her that she is “nothing but a cheap tramp with dyed hair and the pretense of a respectable job.” He then kisses her, telling her there is a way to fix her problem. He tells Marion to put her lipstick on, and she obeys, and they have sex to her disgust. After, he says he wants to continue the sex various times a week and strokes the phone receiver to intimidate her. Marion doesn't say anything. After telling Stan, he excitingly tells Marion they can use the information as blackmail for her boss. He explains that her boss would not want his wife and friends to find out, and that they can get several thousand dollars a week from him. Stan calls the situation a cash cow and reassures Marion that her boss will never go to the police about the money. Later during dinner, Marion tells a celebratory Stan “fuck you” and leaves the restaurant. She drives without knowing where she's heading. A cop pulls her over eventually for speeding, and she almost smiles at realizing that it was a female cop because she had never seen one before.
