Arin, an about-to-be-married Islamic woman, introduces herself by strongly suggesting she is pregnant, then elaborates that the father of her unborn children is not the man she will marry, Hakeem, but instead her best friend Gloria’s brother, Isaac. Arin recounts meeting Isaac right before she is to be married, as he tells her that he saw a bird who supposedly told him his own future. This sparks a conversation between the two regarding Arin's upcoming marriage and her feelings about cheating on Hakeem, during which she tells Isaac she feels only slightly guilty. Isaac later reveals that the bird also told him that he would die soon, and that he believes he witnessed the bird turn into a woman. Nine months later, Arin gives birth to twin boys, and notes that the number of birds visiting her house has sharply increased. When the babies have grown to six months old on a day not long before Christmas, Arin finds herself alone in her house, and decides to visit Isaac. She goes to Isaac's office looking for him, but finds the building in a decrepit state. This worries her, especially since she and Isaac have not been in contact for a long while, but she simply drives home. To her surprise, she finds Isaac there. They share a happy reunion, except for when he mentions his fear of the bird's prediction, which Arin thinks nothing of. They are suddenly interrupted by Arin's mother, who has brought the babies back from a walk, and Arin introduces her to Isaac. Her mother insists that Isaac meet the twins, and when he does, Arin is somewhat pained to confirm that he is indeed their father. Three days later, Gloria calls to tell Arin and her husband Hakeem that Isaac has been dead for four months, and was buried on the day that he visited. Shocked and aggrieved by this impossibility, Arin isolates herself away from home, until she is eventually convinced to come back. Pregnant once more, this time with Hakeem's child, she admits she cannot think of the kindness he shows her in the wake of Isaac's death, but instead of the birds she has seen, and what they might have been trying to tell her.
