Lyle is a public defender coming home early when he walks in on his wife having sex with a detective. Paralyzed and in awe, Lyle stands there while the man tries to calm him, but before uttering a word, his wife shoots him in the head. The bullet grazes his face and practically obliterates his ear, and while he's on the floor, Lyle hears the two plan their escape to the wife's family's cabin nearby in Calcutta, Ohio.
When he regains enough strength to stand, Lyle grabs the gun he was shot with and the detective's badge and begins driving, hoping he will find the cabin. On his way there, he sees a woman hanged from a tree and stops, thinking it is his wife, but after helping her down he realizes that it is a stranger. He comes to find that an entire town had been on the sidelines watching her hang for her crimes as a witch. Convincing them to hand her over with his detective badge and gun, Lyle saves the woman from the rednecks and brings her along with him. She doesn't know where to go, so he tells her where he is going, and she decides to join him, giving him detailed directions on how to reach the cabin.
When they arrive, Lyle sees her transform and take on several different forms. She bewitches him and places a horse bridle in his mouth, taking control of him, before the two enter the home.
