Plot Summary
During a treacherous storm, five people abandon the car they've crashed and approach a small house, looking to use the phone and shelter themselves from the rain. There they find Miriam, a young girl, who gleefully lets them inside to use the phone but, much to their dismay, they can't get a tow truck for several hours, since there have been so many other crashes that night. The crew, comprised of two women and three men, make themselves at home, asking Miriam to boil water for coffee and raiding her cabinets for food. They ask about her life, inquiring how a girl so young has been left alone, but she informs them that she's on her own. One of the men creepily approaches Miriam, asking if she's afraid of strangers like himself, but she says no because she seems to know about their past sins. When he falls asleep at the table, Miriam gets annoyed at his snoring and decides that it should be no more—the crew eventually notices him and looks upon him in horror, realizing that he is dead and his face is disfigured. Panicking, they try the doors, only to realize they're locked, but they try to reason with themselves; a girl of Miriam's size could pose no threat to them. So they head upstairs and go to sleep, hoping in the morning they can get rescued. The next morning, as they're deliberating on their next point of action, Miriam startles them. They begin thrashing against the doors and trying to break windows but to no avail. One of the men asks Miriam why she is doing this and she responds that it is because they're bad people: they've stolen and lied and cheated. Finally, toying with them, Miriam releases the doors and lets them escape the house, though they haven't escaped their grip. Centuries ago, when her parents upset her, Miriam decided that they should be no more, and they weren't. Since then, she's retained the same physical age and has been using her powers to control the environment inside the house. Now that she's set herself loose, her playground encapsulates the entire Earth.
