Plot Summary
Parthenia is an African American woman who has been married to a comedian, Craw Daddy, for 54 years. Together, they have three daughters, but all of those relationships have been strained in the wake of allegations of sexual abuse made against Craw Daddy. Their youngest daughter, Joanna, ran off years ago, but one day, Parthenia opens the door and finds Joanna’s son waiting for her. Parthenia begins to take care of the baby as though it is her own. Craw Daddy has a gig that night, a fixture in his comeback tour. It is the year 2010, and they are in Los Angeles. He hits Parthenia on the way to the show, but Parthenia forgives him. Her daughters resent that she stayed with their father, despite the many horrible allegations that came out about him and put a pause to his career and wealth decades earlier. Parthenia watches the show from the side, and she notices a young girl, Eboni, who interns for Craw Daddy and is enthralled by his presence. During an intermission, Craw Daddy goes to check on Eboni, and Parthenia can see that he came onto her. Outside of the gig, Parthenia decides that she can do this no longer. Despite having testified to protect her husband in 2010, she knows that it is only a matter of time before his crimes catch up to him. She pleads with her driver, Clarence, to take Joanna’s baby away and raise it, so that she can return to her mother’s grave and beg for forgiveness. In response, Clarence and his cousin, Junius, take Parthenia in her car, along with the baby. As they drive, Parthenia spots Eboni through the window.
