Plot Summary
Len Buonfiglio, an ex-New Yorker, owns the Sporting Place bar on the Caribbean island of St. Pierre. One day, Len discovers two breadfruits sitting on the counter of the empty bar. He goes outside in time to see a dark figure running away from the bar, but he can't make out the person's face. Len offers the breadfruits to Adolphus Grainey, a regular customer. Later that night, a Guyanese businessman named Joseph Arjoon comes to the bar to speak with Len. Arjoon tells him that he is in the business of harvesting breadfruits and exporting them to other countries, due to a growing demand. He gives Len his card and offers to speak with him later about the breadfruit business. Len senses something threatening behind Arjoon's words. As soon as Arjoon leaves, Len drives to Grainey's house and discovers an ambulance outside. The police tell Len that Grainey was attacked, and he learns that Grainey visited his elderly neighbor Netty Langford earlier in the night. Len visits Netty's house, where he sees the two breadfruits from the bar in her kitchen. He takes them from Netty's house and returns to the bar. Len thinks about contacting the police, but he fears that he could get in trouble and lose his citizenship. Back at the Sporting Place, Len's close friend Tubby tells him that the police found the body of local small-time hustler Ricky Sagee in the lagoon with a bullet in his head. Len secretly wonders if Sagee was the one who left the breadfruits on the counter. Tubby asks Len if something is wrong, but Len doesn't tell him about the breadfruits, not wanting Tubby to get involved. After closing up the bar, Len cuts into the two breadfruits and discovers drugs hidden inside each one. Realizing that Arjoon is a drug smuggler, Len calls Arjoon, arranges a meeting, and places the breadfruits on the counter. Arjoon arrives with a bodyguard, Parker, and tells Len that he arrived on St. Pierre with twelve breadfruits, but two of them are missing. But when Arjoon cuts into the two breadfruits on the counter, he realizes that Len has replaced them, and the drugs are nowhere to be found. Parker attacks Len, but Len manages to fight him off, drawing on skills from his time as a Muay Thai fighter in New York. Arjoon points a gun to Len's head, but before he can shoot, Tubby sneaks in and kills Arjoon with a cricket bat. Tubby chastises Len for keeping him in the dark. They make amends.
