Plot Summary
An outbreak of worms happens. Everyone is susceptible to an illness which causes worms to materialize within people’s bodies, causing the growth of more teeth inside. However, no one seems to pay it any mind or treat it seriously. People are told to just clean it up and resume their normal lives.
An autistic boy has fixated on the worms ever since he was young. Eventually he gets infected and deals with it by extracting the worms and teeth from himself. However, he has a rare symptom: a monster follows him, made of meat, and rots everything in its path. Now, as an adult, he stays inside of his bedroom, which is messy and disgusting through and through, and he can never see his best friend ever again.
He tries to pass the time by playing video games, but after a while, his eyes get sore, and the worms in his body stir. He rummages through his house to find his toolset with which he can dig out the worms and teeth. He wonders how long it’s been since he lost his job. He thinks about how, through a mirror he saw at work, he looked defiled because of his illness. After he finishes his self-operation, he notices the monster in his house. However, he has grown used to its presence. It gives him company throughout his loneliness. As of late, it has begun to stay for longer periods of time rather than momentarily appearing. Before losing it, his job was his last connection to others. He wishes he didn’t listen to the monster back then. If he didn’t, he may still have his job after all.
The boy goes into the shower and tries to rinse himself off. It feels nice. He tries to brush his teeth, but it causes him pain, after which he spits out blood and flesh. There’s then a slamming at the bathroom vent, which makes him rummage through his house again to find a knife, after which he stabs the knife through the bathroom vent until the thing on the other end of it stops slamming it. On the bathroom floor, he cries about how his life has turned out.
The boy goes to his living room and sits on his couch to eat his meal. He wishes he still had his best friend, who understood his illness. However, he listens to what the monster says, which calls him ugly and insists that his best friend is tired of him. Now, the monster has returned, to take his life. With his knife, he charges it and attacks it until his living room is covered in nothing but brown stains. He thinks about how he’s still alive.
The boy uncovers his mirror and gets himself dressed. He now feels more at peace. He goes to his front door. Although he still has his illness, he feels at least better that the monster is at bay. Still, he goes outside, for the first time in a while, to see his best friend.
