Plot Summary
On a talk show, the interviewer talks to a scientist about his recent discovery. The scientist’s lab has managed to prove the existence of the Christian God by identifying divine properties in water from the river Jordan, which he believes to be the result of a fusion event from God’s physical contact with it. He then goes on to describe how rare contact with the holy water (which has been heavily diluted) with human beings has led to supernatural miracles throughout history. However, he predicts that an event will soon happen where the holy water will rain with much greater density than any previous events, possibly causing human beings to come into contact with even more potent holy water than ever before. The event is predicted to happen on July fourth, in Santa Clause, Indiana.
On the morning of July fourth, the boy gets himself out of bed and looks at the motivational posters he has hung up throughout his room. He then washes up in his bathroom and gets ready. On his kitchen windowsill, he looks at the can of cat food he’s left out, knowing that his lost cat hasn’t yet come around. Outside, the boy sees an influx of visitors to his town, Santa Clause, Indiana, who have all gathered for the holy rain. Among the crowd, a man with a bullhorn exclaims that science will never be able to explain God.
On another segment of the talk show, another scientist expresses her doubt about the holy water’s association with Christianity. She points to other cases where other religious communities have also had chance contact with the holy water, such as Japanese Shintoists at the Tsubaki Shrine and Muslims observing the Well of Zamzam. In other words, the holy water has been observed from a variety of religious communities across the world. The interviewer asks her if the holy water could thus be a bridge between all religions, which the scientist cynically says no. However, she agrees that the holy rain event will happen on July fourth, in Santa Clause, Indiana, stating that such forecast is unanimously agreed upon.
The boy wakes up in a hospital bed. By his side is his sister, though he quickly realizes that his hospital room is packed with religious leaders of all kinds, as well as a camera crew broadcasting him. Some believe that he has become God, and they bombard him with questions about how he feels. They wonder if he has any newfound supernatural power. When he closes his eyes, he sees his cat in his mind’s eye, causing him to get up from his bed and look for it.
The boy leads the crowd from his hospital room outside. He heads to an abandoned fire station, breaks inside, and roams through each floor. He eventually makes it to the top of the building by climbing a ladder and opening a hatch. Up there, he sees his cat and calls it to him, though it doesn’t oblige. He comes up to it instead, feeds it a Jell-O cup from the hospital, and takes it in his arms, which he shows over the roof’s edge to the crowd. Everyone cheers, believing it to be a miracle. He stands there with his hands outstretched, which everyone believes is a blessing, after which he falls forward into them.
