Plot Summary
A woman and her husband check into a hotel, as they have come in to town for the husband’s cousin’s wedding. Right away, the woman is agitated at how long the reception line is, as well as her husband’s constant busyness on his phone due to his public relations job. Soon enough, they realize that the hotel is hosting a sci-fi convention, based around a novel series about a planet called Nectary. All weekend, the hotel is occupied by Nectarian cosplayers hosting workshops and events in line with their franchise.
The woman and her husband unpack in their room. The husband immediately takes a nap, and the woman goes outside to find a vending machine for snacks. At the hallway’s vending machine, her candy gets stuck, after which a nearby Nectarian cosplayer tells her to hit the vending machine, progressively with more and more force, until the candy drops down. Back at the hotel room, the woman watches television beside her napping husband. When he wakes, he asks her to scratch his back, which she does but accidentally scratches him to the point of bleeding. They argue for a little before the woman decides to go downstairs to find a restaurant for dinner.
In the elevator, the woman is crammed with Nectarians who talk about the day’s events. All of a sudden, the woman feels interested by them and wishes to spend time with them. Downstairs, she stops at a table with Nectary novels and is quickly persuaded by a cosplayer to purchase one. She then walks into a gallery room where the most Nectarians are gathered and sneakily grabs a badge. When she is confronted by a woman about her status in a conference room, she finds out that she has gotten the badge for a prestigious and well-respected Lady.
In the conference room, everyone bows to the woman, who is referred to as the Lady. She quickly gets the hang of Nectarian lore and eases into her role after quelling her imposter syndrome. She ends up nominating herself for the upcoming regent election, which causes everyone around her to applaud and celebrate her. One man then comes up to her, disputing her nomination, but she quickly shuts him down and calls him out for stealing the ring on his finger. After the woman leaves the conference room, she feels great.
The woman meets her husband for dinner at the hotel’s restaurant, after which he apologizes for his behavior, which he attributes to work stress. While she gets food from the buffet, she is confronted by another cosplayer who continues to address her as the Lady, which makes her nervous, as she doesn’t want her husband to see. The cosplayer then reveals that the real Lady has been sick with strep throat since the day before, hence why the woman was able to get her badge now, though he insists on keeping her secret safe and supporting her nomination anyway. When the woman eats with her husband, she doesn’t tell him about what has happened.
After a day of exploring the city with her husband, the woman is now alone in the hotel, as her husband has left for his cousin’s bachelor party. In the gallery room, the woman and the other cosplays prepare their campaign speeches for the regent election. One by one, the candidates give their speeches, and the woman is both nervous about what she will say for hers but also excited to have a sense of authority and responsibility. The cosplayer from yesterday is with her, telling her about his plan. He intends to use combustible lighter fluid in order to activate a pyrotechnic show during her campaign speech, having turned off the room’s fire alarms.
Now nervous about her campaign speech and the cosplayer’s plan, the woman no longer feels invested in the so-called craziness of everything having to do with the Nectarians. She instead wants to be with her husband and no longer apart of the regent election. When she is called up to deliver her campaign speech, she cedes her nomination and runs away. By evening, she stays in her hotel room with her husband, watching television shows until they fall asleep.
