Plot Summary
While in Paris, the woman dresses in all pink, with olive pumps, to go man-watching during the sunset. She does it in order to provide herself with practice to speak French. She considers herself a very serious French learner, as she is enrolled in a study-abroad program where she studies French literature, and back at home, she is a committed thespian. For all that, however, she wonders why she doesn’t have a boyfriend—hence, the man-watching.
Ever since she came to France, the woman has been in search of a European boyfriend. She has read so much online about study-abroad love stories, and she has tried—to no avail—to seduce a bartender whenever she goes out with her friends. Once, however, a guy at a bar ended up walking out with her friend and not her.
One day, while hiking in a vineyard, she finds an attractive man, though she discovers that he is only there to warn her of trespassing. They introduce themselves to each other, and he invites her to a nude beach. At the nude beach, she finds that the man has already come with a woman, though she mistakenly thinks she’s her sister. While the man and his purported sister smack each other’s behinds, the woman joins in and slaps his as well, which is when she realizes that the woman is not his sister, rather his girlfriend.
The next morning, the woman goes to her classical poetry class. Beside her, a young man sits down, complains about poetry, and offers her some candy. Reluctantly, she takes it from him, though some of the candies fall on the floor, which prompts the attention of the lecturer, who then proceeds to scold her in front of her classmates. After class, she tosses the candies away in a nearby garbage can and dismisses the faintest idea of the young man being her love.
The woman goes to the Moulin Rouge, thinking from French media that she will find her love there. On her way, she sees a bunch of sex shops along each street, though she elects not to go into any of them, fearing what will happen, like an abduction or kidnapping. In order to avoid making eye contact with other strangers, she looks down at her feet. None of the shoes she sees passing by her are beautiful.
Eventually, she happens upon many sex workers here and there on the street with her. She follows a group of four, thinking they know where the Moulin Rouge is. The woman then accidentally steps on a condom and tells one of the sex workers about it. The woman tells her to get a move on, so she drags her heel against the street’s cobblestones to get it off. She keeps following them until they get to the Moulin Rouge. Thinking it’s a theater, she asks the venue’s bouncer what play is showing tonight. He corrects her notion and tells her to leave.
A man, coming out of the Moulin Rouge, mistakes the woman for a sex worker. Offended, she starts to walk away, only to realize that the man is following her. Her worst fears, of abduction, are realized in her head. She starts running, though she trips on the street’s cobblestones. Quickly, she gets up, abandons her lost heel, and runs into an adult film store. She hides in the racks of adult films, where she attempts to order a cab, though her phone doesn’t work.
When the woman hears the door of the adult film store opening, she comes face-to-face with the young man from her classical poetry class. She says she doesn’t really intend to be here, and he asks about why she is bleeding, why there is a condom still attached to her one heel. The stalker from before comes inside the adult film store, during which the young man helps the woman call a cab from her phone. The young man then intimidates the stalker and pressures him to leave, which he does. Charmed by him, the woman hopes that the young man will join her in the cab he has called. She takes an adult film from a nearby rack and checks it out up front.
