Plot Summary
The woman’s grandmother often warns the woman not to go into the woods alone. The grandmother is generally someone who provides lots of insights and wisdoms, as well as jokes. The woman listens to everything she says, as she considers her grandmother to be the center of her universe. Back in the Caribbean, rumor has it that the grandmother is a witch who can live well over a hundred years.
The woman is now in the woods alone, ignoring her grandmother’s advice. She nonetheless misses her, however. She remembers how her grandmother had a passion for plants while alive. In nature, she feels connected to her grandmother more than ever.
After walking for some time, she spots a building that she has never seen before despite walking in the woods often after her grandmother’s passing. She sees an old woman in front of it. The woman goes up to her, and they casually talk. The old woman says that she has always lived in the woods, after which she tells the woman not to go into the woods alone. The woman says that her late grandmother used to say the same thing. The old woman invites her inside for tea, and the woman hesitantly accepts.
The cabin looks abandoned on the inside. The old woman asks the woman to say more about her grandmother. The woman wants to leave, but she stays and obliges the old woman. The woman says that her grandmother used to love plants and often stay inside her house, the latter of which she never understood. The old woman says that her grandmother stayed inside often because she considered it safe, and she uses the grandmother’s name in saying so. The woman is surprised that the old woman knows her grandmother, and she wants to leave, but she feels like she can’t move.
The old woman explains that the grandmother grew up in the mountains of Puerto Rico where she was a midwife. In the mountains of Puerto Rico, midwives smash in the skulls of babies who they think won’t turn out fine. The woman’s grandmother does this to a newborn one day, but she finds out later that she did it to the wrong child. She then makes a deal with the old woman to keep her safe, but the grandmother soon abandons her in order to come to the United States. Eventually, the old woman finds the grandmother but sees that she’s too old in order to pay her back. She instead seeks out her grandchild, the woman, to pay back her grandmother’s debt instead.
The woman tries to run away, but the old woman holds her down. She takes a cleaver and chops off the woman’s hand with it, saying that a hand will suffice for now but more sacrifices are in order later on. Outside, the woman screams as loud as she can. She remembers her grandmother’s advice.
