Plot Summary
The woman ventures into a confusing complex while the field outside burns. The people from her village are looking for the Bahl’tahi, an honorable role in charge of tradition, storytelling, and higher consciousness. Allegedly, they have all disappeared but will arrive by way of a sacred return.
In an antechamber, the woman stumbles upon a sleeper, a dormant humanoid form no longer living but nonetheless sustained by chemical processes and consumed by bugs. According to another person in the woman’s village, the sleepers are nothing more than units of life to be extracted. The residents of the complex have developed chemicals that cause bugs and other creatures to flock toward the sleepers, devouring them without disturbing everyone else around. The woman uncovers the cloth on one before putting it back. She thinks about how a whole town has been sustained by a sleeper or two in every household. Ever since the first strike, however, the town has since been abandoned.
According to the person from the woman’s village, the Bahl’tahi have been held in a showroom and suspended in time. They are unsavable, but the woman wants to figure out a way. When she finds the showroom, she sees Bahl’tahi captured in glass cases, in dresses too perfectly kept. A voice thunders from one of them, but it doesn’t come from their lips. The woman tries to let the Bahl’tahi out. She wonders how many of them are kept here. She leaves and then passes by residence after residence in the town, continuing to hear voices from the sleepers and Bahl’tahi. Eventually, she finds the control room. She lands a sneak attack on a man and takes down another, and even more men after that, as she heads inside. In the control room, there are many machines, and the woman tries to shut them down. She takes a key.
The woman then enters the Ward, a mystical place not to be talked about lightly, and she discovers why. The Ward is a room full of attendants presiding over women, Bahl’tahi, who have been horrifically turned into incubators. She remembers that she must take the control room key and drop it into the Ward’s grate. However, she looks inside and tells the attendants inside that the Bahl’tahi will rise soon. The attendants disperse, and the Bahl’tahi rise from their beds. A man emerges, with a child, and stands below the grate where the woman is. He demands the key in return for the child. Outside, the Bahl’tahi awake from their glass cases and break free. As the woman reaches out with the key, she stabs the man. They wrestle for some time before the woman pulls the man into the grate with her.
