Plot Summary
Nonc, a UPS driver, and his two-and-a-half year old son Geronimo, make deliveries for FEMA around Lake Charles. Nonc also searches for Marnie Broussard, the mother of his child. Marnie had abandoned Geronimo during the evacuations after Hurricane Katrina. Nonc had no choice but to take “custody” of the child, but it’s been 5 weeks since Katrina, Marnie is nowhere in sight, and Geronimo is in need of parenting. None visits his girlfriend, Relle, who is helping him take care of the child. She is in the middle of work. Nonc pulls outside, leaves Geronimo in the car, and crosses the street to a roadhouse to make inquiries about Marnie. He sits down with a beer and calls his father, who is mute and dying in California. Relle walks in, and the two of them begin talking about Nonc’s father and how he’ll have to go out to California to get him. Relle also pulls out a photograph from a FEMA cadaver book and suggests it might be Marnie. Nonc doesn’t buy it. The two go back out to the truck where Geronimo is waiting, and Relle manages to swab the insides of both Nonc and Geronimo's mouths. She plans to conduct a paternity test. On another round of deliveries, Nonc gets a package with his father's affects—some clothes, a wallet, and car keys. Besides deliveries, Nonc attends AA meetings with Relle for the free childcare they offer. She uses them to talk about her relationship with Nonc and wants him to build a future with her, but Nonc keeps thinking about how to find Marnie. Nonc takes the kid to see a doctor for a check-up. Dr. Gaby expresses concerns about the child’s parenting and has a serious talk with Nonc. She tells him to stick with the boy, no matter what the paternity test says. Later, Nonc gets a call from his father, and he introduces him to Geronimo. The next day, Nonc goes to Calcasieu Parish jail on a delivery run, where he finally finds Marnie. She is brought out and when Nonc talks to her, she keeps making excuses for what happened. It is clear to Nonc that Geronimo will be in his care longer than he thought. He calls Relle and asks if she’s serious about their future plans. He asks her not to mention DNA tests again. Then he gets in contact with his father, and figures out that he can get a 4x4 truck, which he needs. He and Relle leave Geronimo with Dr. Gaby and pack to go to California, where they plan to pick up the 4x4 before the father dies. Dr. Gaby worries that they will not come back. Nonc shifts into fourth gear and drives out of Louisiana with his sunglasses on.
