After a mother, Claudia, has an affair with her daughter, Jane's, best friend's father, her daughter disappears and is substituted by another, almost-right version. She, her husband, and Jane are supposed to move across the state the following day, so Claudia decides to ignore the small inconsistencies and take this version of Jane with her.
The family moves, and the father doesn't notice the difference in his daughter (he's too wrapped up in his job). Claudia proceeds as normal, taking Jane to camp, swimming, and painting.
Eventually Jane changes again, just slightly. Then she keeps changing, sometimes more than once in a day. Claudia at one point feels like she has many daughters, but that are only allowed to be around her one at a time. Her husband still doesn't notice.
Claudia has more or less accepted her ever-substituting daughter as a part of her life when she picks Jane up from camp. Except this time, Jane isn't Jane: she's the best friend, Magda. Though she only responds to Jane and not to her previous name, Claudia hated her so much that she cannot accept her as a new Jane. Instead, she tries taking her home.
When she does, Claudia finds the best friend's father alone. His wife had left with Magda after she told her about the affair. It was useless to try and return Magda to him, so Claudia takes her to the mall instead. There, she finds Jane. Her Jane, with another family. And Jane doesn't even recognize her.
