Plot Summary
Cheryl, a 15-year-old high school student whose mom just passed away, is sent to a therapeutic speech program because she keeps skipping school and acting out. Her stepdad, who's left to take care of her, is trying his best. At the program, some of the other kids make fun of how her mom was hit by a bus. She makes one sort-of friend, Tan, a girl who wants to be there because she wants to be an actress one day. Tan comes to the bar that Cheryl's stepdad owns, and he's ecstatic that Cheryl's making friends. Tan begins spending nights over and learning how to make drinks at the bar. Getting a boyfriend becomes the new, popular "it" thing for the girls at the prep school they attend, even if it's just to hook up on the Ferris wheel. Tan finds one, to Cheryl's consternation. She can't imagine what Tan would want with a guy, especially the nerd she talked to. Angry and alone at home for the first time in ages, her stepdad surprises her by going on a date that night, too...with Tan's mom. Cheryl tries to avoid all of the love in the air, but she feels like everyone keeps shoving it in her face. After enough pressure from Tan, Cheryl pretends to have had sex with one of the local delivery boys. Tan takes it very seriously and makes her send a text to him without realizing Cheryl doesn't have his number. She sends it to a random one instead, who immediately sends back multiple pictures of his penis. Later, Tan finds a flier for a music video that's looking for a girl to play a part. She gets so excited that she interrupts their special therapeutic speech program, which gets her and Cheryl kicked out. Tan keeps pressuring Cheryl to send pictures back to the supposed delivery boy and Cheryl begins making up sexual encounters to get her off her back. Tan tells everyone and Cheryl gets bullied for it, but Tan sees this as an absolute win socially. For Simon's birthday, Tan and her mom come over for dinner. Cheryl doesn't want anything to do with them, especially because of Tan's teasing. Cheryl goes to her room and falls asleep, awakening later to find Tan asleep in her bed, too. Wanting to be alone, Cheryl leaves with her duvet and heads downstairs. The delivery boy is there about to leave with his boss, and he grabs at her when they have a moment alone. The boss steps in at the last moment, and they leave. On the day of the music video audition, Tan finds out she has chlamydia. When Cheryl finds her to prep for the audition, she sees that Tan is covered in bruises. Tan shuts her up and they go to the abandoned building that is supposedly the film set. On the way, Cheryl gets a call from the number that has been sending her nude pictures and it's the wife of the man who did so. She threatens to kill him and the woman she thinks he's having an affair with, but Cheryl just hangs up the phone and walks inside the building. They think she's auditioning too and have her put on a sequined bikini and chose her over Tan. Weeks later, Cheryl is waiting in dread of the video being released because she knows Tan will share it around the whole school to try and embarrass her. Later that day, she sees Tan walking out of a different bar with the delivery boy she thought Cheryl was dating and ignores her. Out of nowhere, Tan's mom appears and tries to console her.
