A man sits, drinking Pet Milk (a dairy product) with his coffee, which makes him think of his grandmother. Whenever his grandmother served one of her guests coffee, she’d offer them cream. If they wanted cream, she would give them Pet Milk. The drink also reminds him of the time after his college graduation, when he was dating a beautiful girl named Kate in Chicago. Kate and the man would sit at a Czech restaurant, drinking a mysterious beverage that contained Pet Milk, talking about how she wanted to go to grad school in Europe and how he wanted to join the Peace Corps. On the night of his 22nd birthday, they went to the same restaurant, but they left before they had the drink with Pet Milk, overcome with the desire to have sex with one another. They took the subway to Kate’s apartment and passed a teenager. Upon seeing the kid, the men thought to himself how much he would’ve liked to see two people so in love when he was that age.
