Plot Summary
Liza notices that little things around her house, like cleaning the sink, making the bed, and taking care of the dead bird on the front walk keep being done without her noticing. Lloyd, her boyfriend of 15 years, says that he hasn't done any of these things, before he leaves for his home in Phoenix at the end of the weekend. Once he's gone, Liza looks for her sunglasses and remembers how she stopped reading poetry after getting stuck in a canyon while hiking almost a year ago. In general, she has let things go, and she thinks very little of the house as a whole, given that it was built very shoddily in a planned community on the edge of the Arizona desert. Later that day, while in the midst of a coffee with her friend Jan, Liza tells her that she thinks her house is haunted. Jan thinks it is her "guardian angel," or the same being which saved her from being stuck in the canyon. Liza doesn't want to think about that. Back home, Liza sets about to find the book she was reading, the title of which she can't remember. Suddenly, she realizes that all of her library books are gone. She calls Lloyd and cries out of fear and frustration. Liza naps as she thinks about her time stuck in the canyon. When she wakes up, she hears someone enter her house and tries to hit them with a candlestick. The person turns out to be Lloyd, who came down to stay with her and to move in and help her around the house.
