Marjorie Lemke is a new mother who is struggling to care for her daughter and work after getting pregnant at nineteen years old. Marjorie lives a tiresome life, trying to earn enough for her infant child while sleeping on a couch in her aunt's basement. One day, however, her repetitive days are interrupted by an intriguing couple who come to stay at the motel where Marjorie cleans the rooms. Marjorie begins having an affair with the husband, Gabe, while his wife, Victoria, is out at work each day. Through her relationship with Gabe, Marjorie considers the past that brought her to meeting him now—a past filled with addiction, absent partners and assault—and the future she will have once he checks out of the motel.
Marjorie learns that Gabe has poked a hole into his wife's diaphragm because he wants to have a child of his own. Marjorie, thinking of the plight she has endured trying to raise her daughter when she was not yet prepared to be a mother, tries and fails to convince Gabe to adopt instead.
