A few years after Cynthia and Larry got married, the cracks in their relationship began to appear. Cynthia, who is ten years younger, is an ex-singer and is preoccupied with television and new things. Larry is an ex-professor who writes market research reports and likes classical music and literary things. When the two began their affair, Larry pretended to like the pop culture that Cynthia was enamored with. Throughout the marriage, Cynthia started to to see how little they had in common. Their differences affect their home life when they both put headphones on to listen to different music. After Cynthia enters a depressive episode following the death of John F. Kennedy, Larry buys her a Beatles album. Cynthia becomes obsessed with the Beatles and acts out a fantasy that she is their new singer. She obsesses over the idea, imagining different venues while wearing costumes and singing in the living room. Larry begins to enjoy the Beatles, and the couple comes to terms with their situation.
