Asante, a fish farmer, dies defending his ship from attackers, but awakes to a woman offering him a deal—to be resurrected from the dead, given a second chance, in return for serving five years with their team, or return to death. Asante assents, and joins the ZeroS, a zombie corps of individuals all surgically modified to be super-soldiers. However, they are left relatively in the dark about their work, and are mostly blind during missions, when their modifications take over and their mind and body detach—Asante doesn't control his own body during these, and his eyesight goes too blurry to see properly. But his body performs feats of immense strength and stamina in this state.
Over time, the fault lines of this project begin to show themselves to Asante. The technology that brought him back from the dead is still fledgling, and many accidents, sometimes fatal, occur to his fellow soldiers. More disquieting are the flashes of sight he gets during missions—the only time he can properly see in battle is when the eyes lock on a target he is about to shoot—where sometimes he sees himself taking down children, under 10 years old.
On one terrible mission, Asante's consciousness returns to his body mid-battle, and he witnesses children taking down all his teammates. Somehow, he survives and later learns that they have been fighting these other super-soldiers, similar but different, and likely better, more deadly. In the end, he is released from duty after one final modifying surgery, and the story ends with a scene similar to the opening one—with a woman, on the brink of death, being offered a deal.
