Plot Summary
Two Jehovah’s witnesses approach a trailer in a rural town. Through the glass door, they see two dead bodies. Rose is lying face up in just a bra, dead. Her husband Warren, also dead, is slumped against the stove. The disturbed witnesses run to a local convenience store run by Simone Sweet where they use a payphone to call for police.
The Sweets live in a double-wide trailer. The front of the trailer is their country store. Every day, Albro Sweet mowed the lawn outside. They had odd lawn ornaments. Simone Sweet, his wife, worked every day in the convenience store alone. Albro has a scar from a fight he has with his first wife whom he cheats on. He drunkenly falls on a barbwire fence during the fight.
He is now married to Simone Sweet. He would go out on night drives and stay out all night. In the morning and during the day he tells Simone of the things he saw at night. A long road passed the store and ended at Warren Tussel’s property. It was covered in trash and rundown. Albro tells Simone that is probably Warren who murdered Robin and then killed himself.
Prior to the murder, Warren is a frequent customer at Simone’s convenience/country store. She has a few memories of him.
Albro goes to visit his sons, Albrenio and Oland, from his first marriage. They are both in their mid-twenties and living in a training home. He gives the news from the past year. Then, he gives them chocolate.
Before Rose came to live with Warren, Warren does business with Archie Noury. They would drive around and pick up bottles and sell them. The Noury’s have a few traditionally successful children but most of them are brawlers, knifers, and unhinged log drivers.
Archie Noury is rough around the edges with a wicked scar on his face. Other than his scar, he is thought of as handsome but bad-tempered. He wears a locket though no one knows what pictures are inside. He is dating Rose.
Albro is driving and goes to turn around in the Tussel’s yard. A truck with HIS and HERS bumper stickers blocks his way. The smell of vanilla surrounds him as he sees a heavy-set woman approach him. The woman is Rose. She is pressing a 12-gauge into his neck and says he better leave and stop trespassing and that Warren does not want him here. Warren is on the steps. The man backs out and leaves. He sees a mark where Rose tried to scrape the HIS off of the truck.
Back in his kitchen in the morning, Albro drinks coffee and his wife makes brownies for the store. The scent of vanilla reminds him of Rose. Albro is out mowing the lawn when Warren Trussel and Rose arrive. Warren has brought some cans to sell. He goes into the store but Rose stays outside. She goes up to Albro who has stopped mowing. Warren comes out with a drink and goes to sit in the truck. She tells him that Warren says it’s okay for him to turn around in the yard. Rose squeezes his groin and then walks away to the truck. They leave.
When Albro goes inside, Simone says she saw him talking to Rose. She asks about it. Albro lies and says he gave her the time.
Simone explains that Rose is Archie Noury’s wife. Rose left him and moved in with Warren.
Albro takes a Brownie, wishing it smelled more of vanilla. He buys a bottle of vanilla later and puts it in his pocket.
Miles away Archie was sharpening his knives and readying his guns for something. He yells that no one pulls anything on him.
One night after Simone goes to bed, Albro goes outside to meet Rose. He gets cleaned up for her. She is waiting outside. She gets into his vehicle. She tells him to go to her place and park behind the chevy. He does this. They have sex in his vehicle. A light flashes. He thinks it is Warren taking a picture of them. They go their separate ways.
The next morning, Archie spends the entire day getting drunk. Albro mows his lawn. He has to get a part for the mower. It seems like a storm is approaching. He goes back to fix the mower.
The Jehovah’s Witness man was incapable of dialing the phone for his hands were shaking so bad, so the woman dialed and called for the police. After she hung up the phone she began talking to Simone about what she saw. She buys a soda from Simone. She tells her that a police cruiser is coming. It is downpouring. Simone says she has to run out to the garage where Albero is working for a moment.
In the garage, she tells Albero that the Trussels were murdered and that the police are coming. She tells him that she is going to tell him something, and she tells him to shut up.
