A young woman boards a bus to Arkansas to meet her new husband, Bill Richards. At the station, she waves goodbye to her mother and Matthew, who is supposed to be her brother but is actually her son. As the bus whisks her away to a new life, she recalls her secret story of motherhood. After becoming pregnant at age 15 out of wedlock, she delivered Matthew in a barn with the aid of her mother. Although she wants to openly raise Matthew as her son, her mother convinces her that she can only be by his side as a false sister. Matthew is entirely raised by his grandmother, and only his name is decided by the young woman. She watches over him as a baby and tells him that she will reveal the truth one day, but as he grows older, she gives up hope. After arriving at the station, she gains the courage to call her mother and plans to have her reveal everything to Matthew. Over the short call, she does not share her feelings and resolves that her mother is always right.
