Plot Summary
Jack Keene receives a letter from Roberta Cloud, a 102 year old woman. She says that she is blind now and had a friend write him this letter because she needs his help. Jack drives out to see her. Roberta asks him to help her find her son because she's dying in a week and she hasn't seen him in many years. His name is Davey Cloud. She gives him a picture of the man that was taken about 30 years ago. She says she had him when she was 20 so he would be about 82 years old now. She also knows he used to work at a restaurant. She doesn't have any other info to give Jack, not even the year he was born. Jack has no idea how he will find this man based on this information, but she says she has a "special feeling" about Jack. He drives around the reservation in search of this man, stopping at many restaurants along the way. No one seems to know who Davey Cloud is, and everyone says they didn't even know Roberta had a son. One woman says he looks like Graham Greene, an actor in a movie she's seen. Jack agrees but feels guilty for agreeing because they're both 'Indian'. He continues his search, and a police officer tells him the picture looks like another actor he knows. The policeman also suggests that Jack give up given the circumstances of his search. As Jack drives home, he considers giving up and decides to drive to see Roberta the next day and tell her he's failed. He wakes up the next day and sees Graham Greene on TV in the movie the woman told him about. He arrives at Roberta's house and there are multiple cars parked outside. There are people inside of the house. Roberta is dying, but she's been asking them for Jack. He goes in to see her and she looks weak and her voice is very faint. She sees Jack and says she knew he would find her Davey. She 'greets' Davey and tells him its been too long. She says this many times as her voice fades and she passes away. Jack never tells her that Davey wasn't there. As he leaves the room, the people ask who he is. He explains the situation and they say he couldn't find Davey because he died when he was a boy. He would've been their great uncle. They ask what Roberta said to him, and Jack says she thought he was Davey. They just say "and so you were".
