Plot Summary
Nora, a lab scientist on the outpost planet Windsong, is questioned by Colonel Jamison from HQ on New Eden about the recent arrival of Elizabeth’s contaminated body. Wrapped in a cocoon created by alien “spiders,” Elizabeth's anatomy is undergoing a metamorphosis. Jamison asks to see Brent Warren, a naked creature with a distorted human face called a “moth,” who has emerged from the cocoon. His parents, Ted and Gina, show compassion for their transformed son, who exhibits intelligence, but Jamison is unconvinced of his humanity. During their visit, Elizabeth’s parents are disgusted and wish to euthanize their daughter. Enraged, Nora visits the Warrens and asks whether Brent has ever shown signs of precognition. Gina confirms this. They’ve heard rumors of other moths displaying similar powers. Nora tells them of HQ’s intention to eradicate the moths and quarantine the planet. She hopes that HQ would reconsider once they’re aware of the moths' ability. However, Ted refuses to exploit his son’s powers. Upon Nora's return to the lab, a metamorphosed Elizabeth uses her clairvoyance to save Nora from Elizabeth's belligerent father. Jamison, still skeptical about the moth’s foresight, sends a report to HQ that would initiate the genocide. Impulsively, Nora paralyzes him and leaves his body for the spiders. She plans to alert the citizens of HQ’s malicious intentions and organize an evacuation to the wilderness.
