Plot Summary
Mahasim, aged 15, Kajan, aged 13, and Caph, aged 11, live together in an apartment in Las Vegas. After Caph was born, their father left them to return to Dubai, where he is a successful physicist, to start a new family. The brothers’ mother did not want to be a mother so shortly after their father’s departure, she decided that she needed her own space and left as well. She still sends them money for rent and living expenses as means to survive, but otherwise, the brothers are left to their own devices. Mahasim, as the eldest, is most concerned with the safety of his brothers and keeping them together. He begins hoarding condiment packets and reading a lot of their father’s academic work. Kajam starts to act out, leaving messes around the house, as if he does not need any parent in his life, though both of his brothers know he is lying; he becomes infatuated with conspiracy theories. Caph, the youngest, follows Kajam around, cleans up after his siblings, and cuts his own hair even though his mother sends them money for haircuts. Caph is also the one that insists on taking the laundry down to the laundromat. Whenever he goes down, the other two have to keep watch and stand guard so he is not jumped by the older boys in their area. The brothers develop their own culture and idioms derived from watching the same shows together. Mahasim and his brothers eventually save up enough money for a ticket to the Vegas address on the envelopes, where they believe their mother is staying. There they find a burned down house, which raises more questions. As they continue their existence in the old apartment, they are visited by a woman who they think is a social worker and a colorful man named Zolt. Mahasim eventually saves enough to buy an old car. One day, Mahasim decides to walk home, instead of taking a bus like typical. He notices a trail of laundry and sees some of his own belongings. Kajam experiences something similar. They both follow the trails to find a bloodied Caph, who has been stabbed. They do not want to go to a hospital for fear of being separated from one another. Mahasim decides to take them to their mom, whose general location is known to them. As they speed in the old car Mahasim bought, with Caph bleeding in the back, they encounter an alien spaceship. Years later, Caph wakes up in a hospital, Kajam is a photographer, and Mahasim writes about his family.
