Plot Summary
On the evening Peter and Norma call their children David and Kathi into their kitchen and tell them they are getting a divorce, Peter worries his relationship to his kids will never be the same. The next weekend, Peter shows the children his new apartment and they watch a movie together. At a loss for what else to do, for the next few weekends they develop a routine: they watch cartoons on weekend mornings, then go to a museum or watch a movie in the theatre. A few weeks later, Peter decides to bring the kids sledding, and that becomes their new morning activity. One Saturday night, after Peter has dropped the kids back with Norma, Peter meets Mary Ann at a bar. They hit it off immediately and Peter asks Mary Ann to go to a movie with him and the kids the next day. Nervous, he calls Norma and asks for her advice, but the movie turns out great. The kids like Mary Ann and Peter appreciates the ever-so-slight parenting break. For the next few months of winter, their routine continues, but this time Mary Ann joins them every other week or so. When summer comes, however, the kids go to the beach almost everyday. During Peter's vacation time, he spends every day swimming in the freezing ocean with his kids. He wishes the sunshine would last forever.
