Plot Summary
After nuclear warfare pollutes Earth’s rain and scorches its ground, mankind lives in stations above it, and only the unfortunate – or the exiled – inhabit the planet. Molly is a doctor in this desolate wasteland, and her time in its radioactive atmosphere has left her with a cancer she can’t afford treatment for. When an elite assassin for the stations’ syndicates stumbles into her practice and requests an artwork of scars to remember her last murder by, Molly agrees despite her horror. Jada’s payment could save Molly’s life, and in exchange, all Molly must do is draw with blood and knives and hear Jada’s tale of woe. Jada has been an assassin her entire life, working alongside her trusted partner, Eten, to protect the crime boss of a syndicate. Over their decades together, Jada and Eten fell in love and made a life together. But Eten couldn’t bear the constant death. He secretly betrayed Jada and the syndicate, smuggling their boss’s information to the police. When she discovered what Eten had done, Jada knew she’d have to kill him or risk her boss’s wrath. Crying, she waited until he returned home and strangled him to death, breaking her own heart as she did so. Only, Jada was too late, and Eten had already released a compromising video testimony that would bring down the entire syndicate. Molly recognizes her client’s sorrow and takes Jada back to her house to take care of her. She fights her own sexual attraction to Jada while nursing her back to health. Molly notices her guest is a wanted woman, and the reward is five times what Jada would’ve paid her – enough for Molly to truly live. But she’d have to sacrifice a woman who has done the unthinkable to earn that reward. The next day, Molly and Jada return to the clinic. Molly tells Jada her own story. She once prospered as a doctor aboard a station, until one of the syndicates – just like the one Jada works for – rigged a trial to exile her for crossing them. The police break down the door as she finishes her tale. Molly has turned Jada in. She watches in horror as officers shoot Jada to death and give Molly her payment over the other woman’s bloody corpse. After they leave, Molly sits and begins to carve her own illustration of scars into her arm – this one for Jada.
