It's WWII, and Poppy, a schoolteacher, worries about her pregnancy as she leads her children through an air-raid drill. Poppy and her husband have been trying for a baby for a while now, but now that it has finally happened, she's apprehensive. Poppy was adopted after being left in an alley as a child, but she'd never looked for her birth mother. Now, with a child coming, it seems much more urgent, so she sets off to meet her birth mother. When she finds her at a nursing home, Adeline is confused and tells her multiple renditions of her story, leaving Poppy frustrated. Her schoolteacher friend the next day comforts her by telling her that everyone is scared to be a mother, giving Poppy the confidence to tell her husband. She and her husband end up having a heart to heart about their fears, beyond being parents to the war and more.
