Plot Summary
A divorced woman finds herself going to a man's apartment for a date. When she arrives at his apartment, he opens the door and she finds another version of herself inside (referred to as the Other). This version of herself is exactly the same with some slight differences. The Other has arrived to the date early, something the woman would never do. The Other has also arrived with a broken button on her sweater, something the woman would also never do. Confused, the two leave the date early together and go back to the woman's apartment. Since they both see themselves as the original version and not a copy, they develop a system for handling everyday life. They take turns going to work and doing chores around the house. They sleep together in the same bed, enjoy movies at the theater, and share meals. Everything goes smoothly until one day the woman comes home to an array of cardboard boxes along the hallway. The Other has cleaned out the closet and is in the kitchen cooking Chana masala, a meal the woman has never had before. The woman struggles with adapting to life without her husband while the Other begins to strive. The woman misses her ex husband dearly and wants to call him everyday. Eventually, she begins to shrink, losing weight, eating less, and not moving out of the bed. Meanwhile, the Other has gotten a new job as an exotic dancer, reeling in tons of money and trying lots of new things. One day when the woman wakes up, she is so small that she can't move out the bed. She screams for the Other but her voice is too low to be heard. When the Other spots her, the woman fears that she will be crushed to death by her enormous presence. Instead, the Other picks her up in her giant hand and kisses her; they converge into one being. The woman gets out of bed and continues her life with the whole world ahead of her.
