After his mother passes, a middle-aged man reminisces on the relationship between himself, his mother, and their house in rural Pennsylvania. He returns to the house where his mother was born and lived most of her life. Although her parents sold the house in her childhood, she bought it back when the man was a child and kept it up during the Depression the WWII. The man remembers how much he hated living there as a child—he preferred city life.  The man continues to recall his later life. He moved away for college, worked at an ad agency in New York, and had three failed marriages. In his mid-life he comes back to help his elderly mother, whose house had become extremely crowded and home to many cats. Eventually, she dies. After looking back on their intertwined lives, he regrets not appreciating her and her house more.
